This is by far the most I've thought about the movie since the afternoon after I saw it and was confused why everyone else loved it.

Maybe if a better actress had filled Cher's shoes and I felt the movie weren't pretty obvious in what it was satirizing, I would have given it more of a chance.

I guess I did miss something, because I didn't find it funny then, and I thought it sort of half-assed the messages about vanity and idiocy.

Perhaps when I think movies as satire, I think more of "Network" or "The Player" which engage the audience a bit more in deconstructing something they may be taking a bit more for granted in their own behavior, etc... Or, maybe something like The Colbert Report, which, sure, spoon feeds the intended audiences predilections, but which makes a routine out of challenging messages or assumptions.

The material Clueless was satirizing just didn't do much for me. And I wasn't sure that the filmmakers weren't reveling in Cher's lifestyle a bit too much to dilute the satire a bit, and instead just make it camp. The Leaguehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04836241071795980225noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5256317.post-67009091202796959082009-05-07T16:58:00.000-05:002009-05-07T16:58:00.000-05:00It's amazing how something cool can hide in someth...It's amazing how something cool can hide in something awful. From what I've read, a lot of people missed the boat on Jonathan Swift's A Modest Proposal too.

Certainly Cher's character even at the end of the film isn't going to inspire Ghandi greatness, nor are her revelations on the human relationships altogether exacting, but I don't know if a teenage comedy is supposed to have the arc of a hero's journey to enlightenment. I think the level of satire in Clueless is pretty savage and its portrayal of human idiocy I found rather amusing.NTThttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03901133429286964552noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5256317.post-52498897370246339522009-05-07T14:55:00.000-05:002009-05-07T14:55:00.000-05:00And I should mention, Supergirl was intended for t...And I should mention, Supergirl was intended for the "worst" list, not the best. Probably most noteworthy for starring celebrated actors Liam Neeson and Frances McDormand, it was not based on a comic book, but was Sam Raimi's attempt to put his toe into the superhero genre as we knew it in 1990ish, just post Batman.

Some parts are very good, some parts aren't. It also pioneered the Direct to DVD sequel, with two different movies. I've seen neither.

As per Clueless, I just don't remember Cher coming to any revelations that a smarter person wouldn't come to as part of a normal adolescence. I can't cheer for a movie whose biggest victory is that the protagonist is slightly less intellectually and emotionally stunted than she was at the beginning of the film. And then plans to have sex with her brother. The Leaguehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04836241071795980225noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5256317.post-15062502830187623352009-05-07T14:40:00.000-05:002009-05-07T14:40:00.000-05:00Just for the sake of throwing my hat in the ring (...Just for the sake of throwing my hat in the ring (cause I know everyone is wondering what I was thinking), I'm one of those rare middle of the road people on Clueless. It was more clever than I expected, but I don't think it was nearly the work of genius that some claim. I think part of the issue is simply whether or not you find Alicia Silverstone and her onscreen friends to be sort of charming or whether they just bug the crap out of you (their lines throughout much of the movie are funny in ways they don't intend, but I think that still leaves the door open for you to really dislike them. People like that in real life rarely seem to come around to the sort of revelations that Alicia Silverstone's character eventually experiences.)
And I sort of liked The Shadow. I like Alec Baldwin, and I liked the whole movie in a sort of B-movie, Saturday afternoon popcorn movie sort of way. It's definitely got a sort of tongue in cheek kind of vibe, though- more like Darkman than Dark Knight.

Speaking of which- where does Darkman fit in? I don't think it's based on a comic (not sure), but an interesting flick...J.S.https://www.blogger.com/profile/03903186469796595837noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5256317.post-78901694573412599262009-05-07T13:18:00.000-05:002009-05-07T13:18:00.000-05:00Actually, yeah. The Shadow is pretty terrible, and...Actually, yeah. The Shadow is pretty terrible, and felt too Disney and toyetic. I think the aforementioned Penelope Ann Miller probably swayed me. Plus, Alec Baldwin telling Ghengis Khan "You're talking about the US of A there, mister."

But its parts are superior to the whole by far.

I may re-try Clueless. I'm not sure I bought that the movie wasn't soft-selling how cute it is to be a brainless, moneyed twerp. And it kind of pitches incest. But everyone insists that I'm wrong on this one. Nobody ever mentions that Heckerling is also the genius behind "Look Who's Talking" 1 and 2.

I just don't think Clueless (and who knows, maybe the novel I never read) succeeded in whatever message it was supposed to be schilling. Truth to be told, I didn't really think that for a movie that I keep being told was satire, it did much to not celebrate exactly the lifestyle and mindset a satire would be criticizing. Thus, I draw the line from Clueless to The Hills (by way of Laguna Beach, etc...), which is the semi-real-life celebration of Cher's lifestyle. The Leaguehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04836241071795980225noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5256317.post-26415798627291238232009-05-07T11:30:00.000-05:002009-05-07T11:30:00.000-05:00Alright, I gotta step in and defend Clueless here....Alright, I gotta step in and defend Clueless here. Clueless is one of the most satirical takes on high school relationships and culture in cinema. I think you need to watch it again considering how it took Jane Austen's Emma and inverted it into a Fast Times at Ridgemont High with MTV. It consistently had Alicia Silverstone in situations beyond her ability to cope and her eventual maturation outside of her social circle. To call Clueless vapid and stupid while enjoying Supergirl means I think you glossed over it and it definitely needs to be rewatched. Clueless was also directed by Amy Heckerling who also coincidentally directed Fast Times at Ridgemont High, one of the best movies about teenage adolescence ever.

Second, The Shadow was an awful movie that abandoned the radio play and novels viciously pulpy origins. It was too bright and inconsistent. The final battle was a cheesy extraordinarily bad scene of special effects where it cumulated into a telekinetic battle of wills over a knife straight out of a bad Scanners sequel retread. Terrible. If you're going to lump The Phantom in bad films, The Shadow is right there with it in the trash heap. The only thing good about that movie is Penelope Ann Miller in her blue evening gown dress.

Finally, the Hills was actually derived from Laguna Beach which was a reality show directly attempting to ape and capture the popularity of The O.C. which was a metariff on Beverly Hills 90210.

Yes, I know too much about teen soap operas. Don't ask me my thesis on One Tree Hill.NTThttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03901133429286964552noreply@blogger.com
