Weekly Rewind Week of 02/08/2026

Mayalsia arrives via BoomTube to the Winter Olympics

Well, the Olympics are Back

We'll be hiding out for the next two weeks or so while the Winter Olympics take front and center in Jamie's mind.

I'm more of a track and field guy/ Summer Olympics fan, but I figured out well before we got married - Jamie loves the Winter Olympics, in part because she went years ago in Canada, and in part because she loves figure skating.  But I'll kind of watch whatever sport at least for a while.  And because we have Peacock, we've been watching lots of the games - but I admit, I have a rough time saying "let's watch 3.5 hours of a preliminary round of Curling".

But I did watch, like, the US Women beat Finland in Hockey, some curling, some downhill skiing, some other stuff, and lots of skating.  And thanks to living with Jamie I know a whole lot of the skaters and what their deal is - especially as she's been watching all the competitions leading up to the Olympics.

If you've never seen Chock & Bates do their Ice Dancing stuff, you probably should.  On Sunday, the American team won skating won the gold, so that was good and Jamie seemed very happy.  I like skating, too, but I am far less stressed out by it.  I mostly just hope no one falls.

and I'm always curious what commentators Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir will be sporting

Anyway, as we get further into bobsled and skeleton and luge, I'll get more into it.  I like moguls and whatnot.  And I plan to watch the Biathlon - but won't watch Nordic combined.  Seems like there's no gender parity and I don't play that game.

The games' coverage is marred by the shocking disappearance of NBC host Savannah Guthrie's mother from her Tucson home.  And is a bit odd as Mike Tirico had to stay in the US to cover the Superbowl.

And then skiing icon Lindsey Vonn broke her leg.  Didn't like that (congrats to Breezy Johnson for nabbing the gold in the downhill).

Anyhoo - the games just started so it's a fine time to jump onboard.

And if you're worried you missed the Opening Ceremonies, you missed this guy trying to keep the arena bumping as all the athletes walked in.

he's from the future

Park and Allergies

As one does if they live in Austin, I've developed allergies.  Fairly severe allergies.  My home is trying to kill me.

But this fall, I went to an ENT and she put me on some good drugs, and this allergy season has been pretty good.  But, hubris, thy name is The League.

On Friday I saw the unseasonably nice forecast and asked Jamie if she were up for hitting a park or something, so we could get our steps in.   We popped over to Garrison near us, and did 30 minutes or so of walking around - and I started to feel that same old familiar feeling.

So, while I am glad we went and we got some nice sunshine and took Emmylou somewhere novel, I spent a good chunk of the weekend battling the after-effects.

Super Bowl

I don't really watch the NFL.  I'm more of a college football guy, but I'll admit - it's good stuff to watch.  I just don't have a team anymore.  I tried to be a Detroit fan, but that didn't work out for me this year as I kept missing games.

By the time we got to the play-offs, I really wasn't invested in anyone, and by this weekend, I guess I was rooting for the Seahawks mostly because I think they have nifty uniforms more than anything else.

But I'd kind of forgotten that Sunday was Super Bowl Sunday when I placed a curbside order at HEB, and wound up dealing with kooky traffic and trying to just get into a curbside slot.  And then waiting for 30 minutes with the door open - and, hey, it was allergies round 2.

Amazing stuff.

I guess folks were mad Bad Bunny was at the Super Bowl, which is odd as he was there before with Shakira.  And, in fact, Shakira mostly performs in Spanish, and no one cared about that...

Anyway, I became aware of Mr. Bunny years ago as he was a favorite in the Cubs' clubhouse and a few players used him as walk-up music.  I speak zero Spanish, but I get it.  But, yeah, for the folks mad about Bad Bunny coming, he put on a hell of a show celebrating Puerto Rico and its people.  And while no shortage of people already liked and admired Bad Bunny - I kinda think drawing any negative attention to the show ahead of time had the worst possible outcome for folks against him playing.
