Ike (and: I am right. Occasionally. About the weather)

Ike in my High School Hood

Some of you (Meredith) have been to my folks' neighborhood. Here's some Admiral-approved photos of damage in Cypresswood.

No idea how your old house held up, Mere. The Admiral mostly stuck to that end of the neighborhood where he lives, back by Mirror Lake.

This is actually a somewhat familiar site from my childhood. Hurricanes. Tornadoes. It's bizarre anyone lives in Houston, let alone its now the 4th largest city in the US.

September weather change

I always say "we get our first break in the heat around September 15th". And, sure enough, Austinites... when did we first see a dip in the warm air that had hung over Austin since July?

September 15th.

This week is in the 80's. Fall has begun to fall. Yes, as everyone tries to tell me, it will probably heat up again for a while in October. And, yeah, sometimes the cool front comes earlier. Sometimes later. But, as a rule of thumb, we get the first days when you can comfortably wear jeans outside and the air is in the 60's at night around September 15th.

yes, sometimes its hot as hell on Halloween. And sometimes it has literally hit freezing on Halloween (1993), but in general...

I'm just saying. September 15th.

Last night I got Jason to put out his Halloween jack-o-lanterns. And that is just awesome.

Crap--is that your house?

no, no, no... sorry I wasn't clear. That's one of the neighbors. My folks' place just lost some shingles and stuff.

It's been so long since I even thought about Cypresswood. Looks like it got creamed. I wonder how my old house looks.

I'm sitting here trying to remember how to get to your old house and I can't do it. I suppose that knowledge is pretty inessential now, but it bugs me just the same.

I was sort of equidistant off either Ella or Cypresswood Dr. Just kind of exit Ella at Rolling Forest, and wind your way back.

Or, as The Admiral gets home: First star on the right and straight on 'til morning.

Oh my lord....Kristy Attaway sent me one of her old house (the Wainscott's)and there is an enormous tree down on the driveway....very scary. I have no idea what happened to the old Fir Forest pad. My parents house now in Northgate just had some trees down in the yard but no structural damage. Definitely agree with Marshall...Cypresswood seems to have gotten hit pretty hard.

Funny how now as adults we worry about the damage from these storms. Back in the old KO days we'd just be excited that the power was out and we didn't have school for a week.

Kristy Wainscott... now THERE is a blast from the past. She was a cool dame. Hope she's doing well, even if her folks' house needs clearing.

I think once you've dealt with your first tree service and pay for your own mortgage, you get to think about all this stuff very differently. My dad's neighbor got gouged by an out of town service that did NOTHING but move a tree away from the roof. They didn't even cut the tree up or anything. Just moved it into a safe spot on the ground.

Actually, now that I think of it I wonder if Jason knows Kristy's husband. He's an assistant atty general in Austin I believe.....Shane Attaway?

Glad everything is alright for your folks!

Never heard of Shane Attaway, sadly. There are a lot of Asst. Attorney General's here in the ATX, but they rarely mix with us local criminal lawyers.

Well it was worth a shot...

Well, if you talk to Kristy, tell her I say howdy. I haven't seen her since college.

Will do. She's got 2 little girls and is doing well. By the way, get Steanso to post pics of those jack-o-lanterns.
