I had the same thought this week. I am guessing there was some editorial policy to show the character of the lead story on every cover, and just showing the shoulders and up doesn't cut it.
And, yes, he also gets shot down on a regular basis. And if the loss of planes and life was as higha s presented when someone went up, we never would have decided an air force was a worthwhile pursuit.
For an "ace", he sure is out of his plane a lot, judging by the covers presented here.
